Facilities management company, AFM has donated time and materials to build a new toilet block at charity, Acorn Enterprises, as part of its eco active community support activity during 2018.

A team of volunteers from AFM Jersey have spent the last four weeks carrying out the Community Support Project at Acorn’s Reuse Centre which involved the creation of welfare facilities.  The project involved building a new toilet structure and the installation of the mechanical and electrical services which will be used by both staff and service users who attend the centre.

The work involved teams from across the capabilities of AFM including their building fabric, electrical, plumbing, decorating, floor laying and office management divisions who worked together during weekends and evenings, along with a number of AFM’s supplier who gifted labour and materials for the project.

AFM’s managing director, Mark Edgar, said: ‘It is always so rewarding to give back to our local community. The Acorn Reuse Centre does an excellent job of upcycling and reusing tonnes of unwanted items, providing training and employment opportunities, and helping lower income families enjoy an improved quality of life by providing the opportunity to buy reasonably priced, reused goods. The charity’s work is incredibly important to many islanders as well as the environment and therefore, when the opportunity arose to assist with the expansion project, we were delighted to help.’

Acorn Enterprises, a trading company of Jersey Employment Trust, is Jersey’s largest social enterprise. The charity provides employment training and support for people with a range of disabilities and enduring health conditions, who might otherwise struggle to find employment in the open labour market.
